Why Local Business Owners Need a Messaging Strategist Before They Need More Marketing
Most local business owners don't have a marketing problem. They have a messaging problem. And there's a big difference.
Today I want to talk about what a messaging strategist actually does and why local business owners need one before they invest more time or money into marketing.
The thing I see over and over again is business owners trying to fix a strategy problem with tactics. They think they need better social media, more content, better SEO, or maybe even paid ads. Those are two very different things.
Before we get into it, if you're currently wondering whether your website is helping or hurting your marketing efforts, I offer Website Copy Audits where I review your messaging, positioning, and customer journey. I'll tell you more about that later, but keep it in mind as we go.
The Website That Was Speaking to Two Different Audiences
Let's start with something that happened recently. I was doing a website copy audit for a business owner, and within a few minutes I noticed something that was making her marketing much harder than it needed to be.
Her website was speaking to two completely different audiences. The headline was written for one group of people. The services page seemed to be written for another. The examples she shared spoke to a different audience altogether.
As I kept reading through her site, I kept thinking about the question her potential customers were probably asking: "Is this actually for me?"
The thing is, this wasn't a copywriting problem. It wasn't a website problem. And it certainly was not a social media problem. It was a messaging problem.
Because before you can write good copy, before you can create social media content, before you can send emails, before you can run ads, you need to know exactly who you're talking to and what you want them to understand. That's where messaging strategy comes in.
What a Messaging Strategist Actually Does
A lot of people hear the term messaging strategist and assume it's someone who manages social media or creates content. But that's not really what I do.
A marketing and messaging strategist helps create the foundation that everything else is built on. We identify who your ideal customer is. We clarify the problem they want solved. We define the value of your offer. We uncover what makes your business different. And we develop messaging that communicates all of that clearly and consistently.
The House Analogy
It's kind of like building a house. Most business owners want to start decorating the living room before the foundation is poured. The social media posts are the furniture. The email marketing is the paint. The website copy is the decor.
But if the foundation isn't solid, everything built on top becomes harder, or it falls down. And you end up with a bathtub in your kitchen. Nobody wants that.
That's exactly what happens with marketing. When your messaging isn't clear, every marketing activity becomes harder. You struggle to write content. Your website doesn't convert. Your social media feels inconsistent. Your emails don't get responses. Your ads become expensive because the message isn't connecting.
The problem is not the tactic. The problem is that the tactic is actually just highlighting unclear messaging.
Visibility Without Clarity Just Creates Confusion
This is one of the biggest misconceptions I see in local marketing. Business owners often believe they need more visibility. And yes, visibility is important. But visibility without clarity doesn't create customers. It really just creates confusion.
You can increase local visibility all day long, but if people don't immediately understand who you help, what you do, and why they should choose you, visibility alone is not going to drive growth. Or sales.
That's why messaging comes first. When your messaging is clear, every other marketing channel becomes easier. Website copy becomes easier. Email marketing becomes easier. Social media content becomes easier. Even networking and sales conversations become easier. Because you're not trying to figure out what to say every time you talk about your business. You already know. You have a strategic foundation guiding every decision.
Why This Matters Even More for Local Businesses
This is particularly important for local business growth. Local businesses often compete against companies with much larger budgets. You may not have the biggest advertising budget in town or the biggest team. But you can have the clearest messaging. And that clarity is often one of the most powerful competitive advantages a local business can create.
If you're currently investing time into social media, website updates, content creation, or ads, I want you to take a minute and ask yourself something: do I know exactly who I'm talking to?
Because if the answer is no, that's likely where the work needs to begin. You don't need another marketing tactic or some new platform, and you definitely don't need to post more. You need clear messaging.
How a Website Copy Audit Fits In
If you're wondering whether your website messaging is helping you attract the right people, my Website Copy Audit is designed to uncover exactly this. I look at your messaging, positioning, audience alignment, as well as the areas that may be creating confusion for potential customers.
You can find the details and book your audit through the link in the show notes, or go to lindsaysmithcreative.ca/audit.
Marketing Isn't About Being Everywhere. It's About Being Understood.
Before I wrap up, I want to leave you with this thought. Marketing isn't about being everywhere. It's about being understood.
The businesses that grow consistently aren't always the ones doing the most marketing or being the loudest. They're often the ones communicating the clearest message.
So before you invest in another marketing tactic, make sure your foundation is strong. Because when your messaging is clear, every marketing effort works harder for you.
Thanks for reading, and if you'd like a second set of eyes on your website messaging, I'd love to help through a Website Copy Audit.
